The Conflict in Oaxaca
Indigenous men and women from Atzompa, a town in Oaxaca's Sierra Juarez, march against Governor Ulises Ruiz in the state capital Oaxaca City. One of the signs held up reads "Esta es la 'Guerilla' de la Sierra Juarez-Presente!" This tranlates to, "This is the 'Guerilla' of the Sierra Juarez- Here we are!" The sign mocks the government's claim that an armed guerilla group exists in the Sierra Juarez. Most believe the state government created this "guerilla" in order to justify repression in the area.
